The Germany international midfielder Emre Can has hinted that he is keen to become Liverpool’s captain in the future.
Can did however state that he is not on Steven Gerrard’s level but does keep in regular contact with the Liverpool legend.
“I can say I am a leader but you have to show it. Of course we have other leaders like Hendo or Milner. We all want to do it,” Can told the Liverpool Echo.
“That’s [being compared to Steven Gerrard] of course a big, big honour. I have a lot of respect for him but I am far off that level he played for Liverpool. I have to go my own way, be Emre Can. I met him in Los Angeles, we have stayed in touch.”
Gerrard won the UEFA Champions League in 2005 with Liverpool and is widely regarded as one of the most iconic players in the history of the club.
Can has returned to Liverpool training following an extended break. The 22-year-old was given extra time off after competing at Euro 2016 with the Germany national team.
Liverpool take on Arsenal in their opening game of the Premier League season. Can provided three assists and scored two goals in 49 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions last season.
