Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that Juan Mata has a future at the club after starting the Spanish international in the 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.
Mata looked headed for a summer exit just last week however, Mourinho has revealed that he rates him highly and underlined that the 28-year-old has a lot to give the team this season.
“One thing is the stories people write. The other thing is the reality,” Mourinho was quoted as saying after the game.
“Seeing what happened in our previous club, people thought he had no future. It is completely different.
“I trust him. Every time he plays, I know what he can give and I know what he cannot give. He has a lot to give.
“We have a very good group with lots of options. It is difficult to say that this player is more important than this player. I analyse in the week.”
Mata was taken off after playing just 30 minutes of football during United’s win over Leicester City in the Community shield last weekend, sparking speculation about his future.
TalkSport claimed that the attacking midfielder handed in his transfer request after the incident and that he was looking for a new club.
Everton had been linked with a £20 million move and TalkSport also claimed that Fenerbahce had joined the race.
Fenerbahce want a new attacking midfielder after parting ways with Diego Ribas and Luis Nani over the summer transfer window.
It now appears that Mata will remain at United this summer unless something drastic changes over the next fortnight.
