Manchester City summer signing Ilkay Gundogan has admitted that he spoke with Jurgen Kopp ahead of his move to the Premier League, according to Sport Bild (Via SkySports).
Gundogan worked under Klopp at Dortmund where he lifted the Bundesliga title and played in the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid.
The 25-year-old was one of Pep Guardiola’s first signings for City. The Spanish tactician insisted on signing Gundogan despite dislocating his knee while still at Dortmund.
Gundogan revealed that Klopp told him to make the move to the Premier League.
“To be honest I asked [Klopp’s] advice, if the Premier League was the right thing for me,” Gundogan was quoted as saying by SkySports.
“He said ‘yes’ and believed I would feel very well here and that the playing style would be perfect for me.
“It was good to have my impressions confirmed.”
The 25-year-old missed Euro 2016 and the opening weeks of the league due to his knee injury.
Gundogan scored for City during their 4-0 win over Bournemouth last weekend. The Germany international is once again expected to start when the Citizens take on Swansea City in the Premier League this weekend.
City are currently in pole position in the League with five wins in five games.
