Manchester City summer signing Ilkay Gundogan has revealed that he came close to making the move to rivals Manchester United two years ago, according to the Telegraph.
The 25-year-old went onto become Pep Guardiola’s first signing at City for £20 (via Daily Mail) million and has started the Citizens last two games. Gundogan spent five years at Dortmund where he won the Bundesliga and played in the Champions League final.
“It was not the biggest lie,” Gundogan stated in an interview with the Telegraph when asked about previous speculation linking him with a move to United.
‘Two years ago, three years ago it was not the time. I had a contract at Dortmund and I was not thinking of leaving the club so it was not a discussion.”
Gundogan went onto state that he is very happy at City and enjoys playing under Pep Guardiola.
“We have a very good relationship and I just try to learn from him and he just tries to teach me and show me how I can improve and do better.
“I think we are both enjoying it,’ he says. ‘I knew his style of football before at Barcelona and also at Bayern Munich because I played against them.
“So I was quite sure it fits to my style very well.”
Gundogan is expected to start this weekend when City take on Tottenham in the Premier League. The Germany international played the full 90 minutes during City’s 3-3 draw with Celtic in the UEFA Champions League earlier this week.
Meanwhile, Manchester United host Stoke City at Old Trafford this weekend.
