Skrtel: ‘The Man Utd – Liverpool rivalry is the Galatasaray – Fenerbahce rivalry of England’

The Premier League has many long standing rivalries but according to Martin Skrtel none compare to the animosity felt between Liverpool and Manchester United.

Skrtel described the rivalry as being England’s version of the Galatasaray – Fenerbahce rivalry.

The Slovakian international currently plays for Fenerbahce so knows all about just how intense the rivalry is between the two Istanbul juggernauts.

As a former Liverpool player he also experienced the rivalry between Liverpool and United first hand which qualifies him as one of the few players who have played – and lived to tell the tale – in two of the footballing worlds most recognisable derbies.

“The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United is intense, it is the Galatasaray v Fenerbahce of England, it is the only rivalry I can compare it to,” Skrtel was quoted as saying by Fanatik.

Skrtel also revealed he enjoys the passion as long as it does not spill over into crowd trouble.

“I love the passion shown, as long as nothing is thrown on the pitch and there is no trouble it adds to the flavour,” he added.

Skrtel made 320 appearances for Liverpool before ending his time in the Premier League over the summer with a move to Fenerbahce.

Skrtel was part of the Fenerbahce side that lost 4-1 to United at Old Trafford in the Europa League and beat them 2-1 at the Sukru Saracoglu to top Group A.

The experienced defender has two goals and one assist in 27 appearances for the Yellow Canaries this season.

Despite joining Fenerbahce it was not long before Skrtel faced his former rivals United again.
