Besiktas travel to the Turk Telekom Arena to take on Galatasaray in the Istanbul derby, Arsenal legend Robert Pires believes the Black Eagles will have the edge when the two sides meet on Monday 27 February 2017.
The top of the title clash could end up being a pivotal game in the title race as reigning champions Besiktas could move 10 points clear of Galatasaray if they leave with three points.
Besiktas would extend the gap with 4th placed Fenerbahce to 12 points in the event of a win and be left in a two-horse race with Basaksehir.
A Galatasaray victory meanwhile would close the gap to just four points and leave 2nd placed Basaksehir breathing behind the Black Eagles neck with just a point currently separating them.
Pires was quoted as saying on beIN Sports: “It is going to be a fiery derby but I give the psychological edge to Besiktas, they are leaders and just progressed to the next round of the Europa League.
“It is never easy playing away in a big derby but Besiktas are in great form while Galatasaray are under huge pressure.
“A defeat here for Galatasaray could end hopes of winning the championship.
“It is going to be a great game but Besiktas have the advantage”
Besiktas won the league title last season, are currently in first place and also booked a spot in the Europa League Last 16 where they will take on Greek giants Olympiacos.
Galatasaray meanwhile were suspended from European competition this season after breaching UEFA Financial Fair Play rulings.
The Lions have been in turmoil over the past fortnight following the sacking of Jan Olde Riekerink who has since been replaced by former Juventus defender Igor Tudor.
The ex Karabukspor manager drew his first game in charge 1-1 against Caykur Rizespor.
