Liverpool knocking Arsenal out Champions League was ‘best moment of my career’, says Dutch star

Many years ago Ryan Babel was a Liverpool winger but it turns out that he was also an Arsenal fan according to his latest interview published in the official Besiktas Yavru Kartal magazine.

Interestingly enough Babel revealed that his favourite moment playing for Liverpool was scoring the winning goal against Arsenal. In fact, Babel described it as being the best moment of his career because he scored against the team he supports.

“The best moment of my career was playing for Liverpool scoring against Arsenal, we won that game and it was weird because I am an Arsenal fan,” Babel said.

Babel does not go into which game he was referring to but considering he only scored once against the Gunners during his time at Liverpool we can safely say that he was talking about the 4-2 Champions League Quarter-Final second leg tie at the Emirates.

Arsenal looked set to progress when Theo Walcott scored to tie the game at 2-2, meaning the Gunners would go through on away goals – following a 1-1 draw in the first-leg.

Moments after Walcott’s goal Babel fell in the box under minimal contact from Kolo Toure, allowing team captain Steven Gerrard to score from the penalty spot.

Babel then went onto guarantee progression to the next round after scoring in the 90th minute.

The Dutch winger may claim to be an Arsenal fan but he was not at all popular with Gunners fans or head coach Arsene Wenger who accused him of cheating after the game.

“Perhaps our season died after we played Liverpool in those three games . . . . yes,” Wenger was quoted as saying in the Telegraph.

“At home in the Champions League, we had a penalty that was not given. But at Anfield a penalty was given — and that was the result of a dive. I can say that because Kolo did not touch him.

“Overall, we had bad luck and then more bad luck. But it’s part of the quality of the team to deal with that situation and not to allow that to happen.”

Babel scored a total of 22 goals for Liverpool before enjoying stints at Ajax, Hoffenheim, Kasimpasa, Al Ain, Deportive La Coruna and finally joining reigning Turkish champions Besiktas in January.

The 30-year-old was part of the Liverpool side that beat Besiktas 8-0 back in the 2007-08 season and scored a brace against his current side.

Babel has two goals and an assist in six league games for Besiktas since joining from the La Liga outfit over the winter transfer window.
