Man United bookmakers favourite to sign £42.5m Arsenal star in move reminiscent of Robin van Persie transfer

Man United bookmakers favourite to sign £42.5m Arsenal star in move reminiscent of Robin van Persie deal

Manchester United have been made the bookmakers favourite to sign Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.

The Germany international of Turkish origin would be reunited with former manager Jose Mourinho if he were to join the Red Devils.

Ozil and Mourinho worked together at Real Madrid and the Spanish giants are second favourites as the 28-year-old’s next destination.

Arsenal signed Ozil from Real Madrid on a record £42.5 million transfer fee (Guardian) in 2013.

If Ozil were to join United it would be a transfer reminiscent of when Robin van Persie left the Gunners for the Manchester based giants.

Van Persie announced in July 2012 he would not extend his existing Arsenal deal, which was due to expire in June 2013 (BBC).

The current Fenerbahce star grew disillusioned with Arsenal after failing to win major trophies.

Several other clubs have been given odds but Fenerbahce who the Telegraph recently reported as plotting a move for Ozil have not been listed.

Ozil is of Turkish origin and did grow up as a Fenerbahce fan but the Yellow Canaries would struggle to match his wages.

“Everyone knows I am a Fenerbahçe fan,” Ozil told the Turkish outlet Sabah.

Ozil faces an uncertain future at Arsenal. The 28-year-old will have just 12 months remaining on his contract at the end of the season and has yet to agree to a new deal which has resulted in speculation that he could be on his way out.

The Arsenal star has underlined that he has not made a decision yet regarding his future and that he will hold talks with the North London outfit at the end of the season.

The Arsenal star was quoted by the Hurriyet newspaper as saying: “It would be wrong to comment on transfer speculation, we will see what happens at the end of the season I will hold talks with the club.

“I have not decided what decision I will make yet, we will have to wait.”
