“He disappointed many people” – Steven Gerrard was right about Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, says ex-Germany int
Former Germany international Stefan Effenberg has joined the band of football pundits who have taken aim at Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil.
The 28-year-old was slammed by pundits following the Gunners’ defeats to Stoke City and Liverpool.
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard labelled him as a ‘liability’ following Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to the Potters.
“He offers his teammates nothing away from defensively and away from home he’s a liability,” Gerrard stated live on BT Sport.
“Ozil gives up and quits, he doesn’t track the run.”
Effenburg believes Steven Gerrard was spot on with his analysis of Ozil.
“I have seen matches with Mesut where I say: ‘he must do more’. I remember those matches against Bayern in the Champions League,” Effenburg wrote in his column for t-online.
He disappointed many people there – including [Germany manager] Joachim Low,”
“It is not like he is 20 years old and a young player. He turns 29 in October.
“You wait for an improvement in that area for years. You hoped there would be a development, but it hasn’t happen.”
Ozil has however been impressive form for the Germany national team. The World Cup winner provided an assist for Germany’s opener against the Czech Republic and went onto score against Norway during a 6-0 win.
Effenberg made 35 appearances for Germany during his career but failed to lift an international trophy.
Last sentence sums this up tbh.
