Liverpool star Emre Can faces an uncertain future due to his contract situation.

Can has under 12 months remaining on his contract but has yet to sign a new deal.

The 23-year-old has been linked with the likes of Juventus and Bayern Munich over the past few months.

Unless an agreement is met over an extension Can will be free to enter direct talks with other clubs in January.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has urged Can to sign a new deal and stay on at the club.

“If it was me and I was in his shoes I’d sign the deal,” he told BT Sport.

“We’ve got a German manager who believes in [him], he’s a regular in this team, he’s grown [and] Liverpool have helped him to improve.

“He’s getting in the national team, he’s moving forward, he’s looking a really good player.”

Can has not ruled out signing a new deal but has not confirmed that he is nearing an agreement either.

Gerrard revealed that while Can has attracted interest from Bayern and Juve he is not sure the midfielder of Turkish origin would be guaranteed a place in those teams.

“There’s talk of Bayern Munich and Juventus being after him—and rightly so, he deserves that credit—but I’m not sure there’s a guarantee he gets in those teams,” he added.

“Could there be a situation where he leaves thinking the grass is greener on the other side and maybe makes the wrong decision?”

Gerrard also questioned the motives behind Can not signing a new deal as he has been given first team football and that the fans generally are pleased with him.

“I think you make a decision like that if you’re unhappy, if you’re not playing, if the fans aren’t having you—in a situation like that, I understand if they move,” he said.

“But if you’re happy, the manager’s having you, you’re playing, you’re getting offered a good deal, I don’t see any reason why he needs to make the move.”

The star midfielder has three goals and two assists in 15 appearances for the Reds in all competitions this season.

Liverpool are currently 5th in the Premier League, 12 points behind league leaders Manchester City.
