Former England boss reveals why Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez want to leave Arsenal
Former England national team manager Steve McClaren has revealed why both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez want to leave Arsenal.
Both Ozil and Sanchez have been heavily linked with exits from the north London based club after failing to pen a new deal.
The duo have under five months left on their contracts and could end up leaving the club for free in the summer.
According to McClaren, both Sanchez and Ozil want to leave the Gunners because they are not improving as players.
The experienced manager went on to state that the duo have become disillusioned with boss Arsene Wenger’s coaching techniques.
“This is always a problem in big clubs or any clubs,” McClaren told Sky Sports.
“I’ve worked with top players and all they want to do everyday is get better.
“And that’s your job and that’s what they look for. It’s not just about joining a successful club and winning trophies.
“But are they developing and getting better as a player. And I think with Sanchez and Ozil, that’s why they have problems behind the scenes is are they getting any better?
“We talked about [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain. Was he getting better at Arsenal?
“Is he getting better at Liverpool? On yesterday’s evidence: Yes he is.
“That’s why you’ll get disruption in your club if your players don’t feel they’re improving.
“Your job as a coach… yes it’s winning football matches but it’s also about making players better.
“You have buy them for £10m and sell them for £50m. And that’s what Arsenal have done but are not doing at the present moment.”
Neither Ozil or Sanchez were included in Sunday’s squad. Arsenal went on to suffer a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth.
Arsenal will be hoping to return to winning ways when they take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League this weekend.
