‘He’s Responded Brilliantly’ – Charlie Nicholas Picks His Arsenal Player Of The Season

Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has given his verdict on who his former sides player of the season is this season.

Nicholas was asked whether he thinks Nacho Monreal has been the Gunners player of the season.

The former Gunners player feels that Monreal has not been strong enough defensively to be considered the best player this campaign.

Instead he gave the accolade to Mesut Ozil.

The contract-rebel has been in fine form recently picking up back to back player of the month awards for November and December.

Nicholas feels Ozil responded well to a shaky start to the season and has been brilliant since returning to form.

“No (Monreal is not Arsenal’s player of the season),” Nicholas said on Sky Sports.

“The same way Ozil’s part of a lack of attacking options or he’s downed tools for a little period of time.

“Monreal, I love his honesty, I’m very comfortable with Monreal at left back but please not as a centre back.

“You don’t win titles, you don’t win cups with him, it’s only occasionally you win an FA Cup.

“For me it’s Ozil, I think he’s responded brilliantly in the last few months.”

Ozil will however, be a free agent at the end of the season unless he extends his current contract.

The 29-year-old is free to talk with foreign clubs over his future and will be leaving unless the status quo changes.

The playmaker of Turkish origin put on yet another impressive display as Arsenal progressed to the League Cup final last week, eliminating Chelsea from the competition.

The Gunners take on Swansea next on Tuesday 30 January at the Liberty Stadium.
