Manchester City suffered a shock 3-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie.
City boss Pep Guardiola made a surprise change heading into the clash, swapping Raheem Sterling for Ilkay Gundogan and switching to a four-man midfield.
Suffice to say the tactical changes did not go to plan.
Gundogan was pretty much singled out as one of the main culprits behind City’s poor display but was he really to blame?
Who exactly put on a stellar performance and it is worth highlighting that Gundogan was played out of position.

Anyway we took a look at how City fans reacted to Gundogan’s display on social media.
Let’s just say Gundogan’s display did not go down particularly well.
Gundogan on the pitch doing exactly what?

What is the point of Gundogan here?

Two wingers has worked all season, why change that. Gundogan looks lost (so does the whole team though tbf)

Gundogan, don’t come back. Ever. Again. Please.

And while you’re at it ship Gundogan back to his kebab shop in Turkey.

But was Gundogan really to blame? he is not a winger!
He was hung out to dry, if you want a right winger who can also keep the ball and is also comfortable centrally then why wasn’t Bernardo playing?! He was perfect for the roll he gave to gundogan !!!

Can people who follow @ManCity closely let me know what the thinking is behind playing Gundogan as a wideish 8 and KDB as a double 6 – that’s ass backwards.
— BundesPL (@BundesPL) April 4, 2018
Well. We all rightly laud Pep but he got it very wrong tactically tonight. Game over after 31 minutes with us looking lopsided with Gundogan asked to play in a totally alien position.

City fans turning on Gundogan ?

Why did Guardiola try the four-man midfield after it didn’t work last time around?
Generally, I wasn’t convinced when Guardiola tried to play Fernandinho, Gundogan, KDB & Silva together last season. Thought that had been binned, but he tried it in League Cup final (a hint that he favours it in big games) and I don’t think that looked great then either
