Manchester City star playmaker Ilkay Gundogan could have ended up making a move to Barcelona prior to his Premier League transfer.
The Germany international has established himself as a first-team regular in Pep Guardiola’s side this season after overcoming a long-term knee injury.
However, according to a claim coming out of Spain this morning, Barcelona were set to sign the star midfielder.
Mundo Deportivo state that Gundogan had agreed personal terms on a £17.4million transfer and even passed his medical.
Per the source, the medical was conducted away from Barcelona to avoid transfer speculation. The report goes onto state that the deal was set to be finalised however, Luis Enrique put a halt to the move.
Mundo Deportivo states that Enrique rejected the transfer as he wanted to land Turkey international Arda Turan instead.
In hindsight, the decision has proven to be a poor choice as Gundogan has established himself as one of Europe’s top midfielders while Arda Turan now plays for Turkish side Basaksehir.
