Galatasaray have taken a giant stride towards lifting the Turkish Super Lig title following their 2-1 win over Akhisar Belediyespor over the weekend.
The Lions took an early two-goal lead in the first half following a scintillating performance by Garry Rodriguez. The Cape Verde international netted twice leaving his side in a comfortable position going into the break.
However, an own goal from Serdar Aziz five minutes into the second half set-up a nervy end to Sunday’s encounter for the Lions.
France international Bafetembi Gomis missed his second penalty in successive games and had to be consoled by a young Galatasaray fan after the final whistle.
Meanwhile, Istanbul Basaksehir suffered a huge blow to their title challenge after being held to a 1-1 draw by Sivasspor.
Fenerbahce capitalized on Basaksehir slipping up. The Yellow Canaries came back from a goal down to pick up all three points at the Sukru Saracoglu.
Aykut Kocaman’s side have won six games in a row and appear to have struck form at the right time.
Reigning champions Besiktas kept their slim chances of defending the title alive after beating Kayserispor 2-0 at the Vodafone Park Stadium.
