Germany suffered a shock 1-0 defeat against Mexico in their opening 2018 World Cup Group F clash at the Luzhniki Stadium.
Hirving Lozano’s first-half goal was the difference between the two sides in an entertaining game in Moscow.
The defeat was Germany’s first defeat in the World Cup since they lost to Spain in the 2010 semi-final.
It was also the first time Germany have lost their opening game of the tournament since 1982.
Mesut Ozil started for the Germans and as is so often the case when a team he plays for does not win, he was blamed.
Arsenal fans felt the playmaker of Turkish origin was harshly singled out. Afterall the team in general was poor.
Many Arsenal fans defended Ozil.
Do you think they were right to do so?
Why is ozil’s the world favourite scapegoat ?

The whole Germany team has been poor, not just Ozil still. Gotta be real

Nevill is obsessed with Ozil. Any excuse to slag him off.
— Amy AFC (@newmanqueen1) June 17, 2018
How can you sit there and criticise Ozil as if there wasn’t 10 other players on the pitch honestly give it a rest with this shit agenda u lot have
— schön???? (@gbxmio) June 17, 2018
Germany’s full backs pushed up too high. Hummels getting caught out of position. Boateng too slow. Khedira wasteful. Front 3 lacklustre. But yes, lets blame Mesut Ozil who was actually one of the few who turned up and put in a decent performance.

Ozil can’t win. He busts his hole to get back to try and cover for the German fullback, then you’ve got Phil Neville, literally after just accusing him of not putting in any effort in saying ‘Why was Mesut Ozil the last covering fullback?’
You can’t make it up#GERvsMEX

Ozil was in the right back position with the midfield and right back completely missing but it’s somehow his fault. Weirdos.

Only 1 on the pitch attempting to create anything always looking for the killer pass
— AubaZette (@TheAubaZette) June 17, 2018
No Surprise ?? He is the scapegoat ??
One of the few German players who putted decent effort but at the end of the day AGENDA against him goes on???— Jyotir Singh?️?? (@jyotirsinghh) June 17, 2018
Ozil was the Rolls Royce today, the rest of the German side were like 1982 Fiestas.
— Arsenal, who else!? (@Goonereaststand) June 17, 2018
Kroos Khedira Hummels Boateng Draxler & Muller all dropped 2/10’s, But you only have energy for Ozil. So shameless!
— ? (@ghost1ace) June 17, 2018
Lol ofcourse the camera goes straight to ozil
Kroos, muller, khedira etc but you know let’s all blame ozil ??
— saxon71 (@stuafc71) June 17, 2018
Mesut Ozil being blamed as usual despite being one of the few Germany players who put on a decent performance
Made four key passes… not his fault Timo Werner is hopeless in big games
— Turkish Football (@Turkish_Futbol1) June 17, 2018
Germany been poor going forward, Ozil the only one trying to make things happen. Contrary to what you’ll hear, he’s had a good game so far.
