Besiktas manager Senol Gunes has agreed a four-year contract to coach the Turkish national team, the Turkish Football Federation said on Thursday.
Gunes will return to the job he held 15 years ago when he guided Turkey to an unprecedented third-placed finish in the 2002 World Cup.
The 66-year-old coached Turkey between 2002-04 during a golden era in Turkish international football.
Gunes will replace Mircea Lucescu who had a dismal run in charge of the national team.
Under Lucescu’s stewardship, Turkey were relegated to League C in the UEFA Nations League after finishing bottom of their group.
Gunes will take charge of his role on June 1 and is expected to resign as Besiktas manager as a result.
