Turkey are favourites to qualify top of their Euro 2020 Group with just two games remaining.

Senol Gunes’ side sit in pole position with 19 points after eight games. Turkey managed to defeat World Champions France and held Les Blues to a 1-1 draw in Paris last month.

Turkey face Iceland on Tuesday evening at the Turk Telekom Arena. The Ay Yildizlar have struggled against their Scandinavian opposition in recent years and will be eager to set the record straight.

Iceland come into the game with just one win from their last three games and know a defeat will eliminate them from the competition.

Turkey meanwhile can guarantee a first-placed finish should they defeat both Iceland and Andorra over the next week.

The last time Turkey managed to reach an international competition was Euro 2016. However, they failed to qualify from their group after a disastrous campaign.

Senol Gunes is no stranger to managing the national team. During his previous sting as Turkey boss, Gunes led his side to a third-placed finish in the 2002 World Cup. The experienced manager was dismissed after failing to qualify for Euro 2004.

Turkey have been in exceptional form during their current qualification campaign. Gunes’ side have suffered just one defeat – which came against Iceland – so far and have racked up six victories.

Gunes is reaping the benefits of being able to field the likes of Caglar Soyuncu, Cengiz Under and Merih Demiral who all apply their trade in Europe’s top leagues.

In-fact, the majority of Turkey’s squad play abroad with just seven players being selected from the Super Lig’s big three (Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Besiktas).

Soyuncu has become a household name in the Premier League this season and helped Leicester City shut-out Arsenal during their clash on Saturday.

Bar a disaster, Turkey will qualify for next-years Euro 2020 and with their current run of form and impressive pool of talent they could even consider themselves dark horses to win the competition.
