Manchester United keeper Andre Onana has been called up to joined Africa Cup of Nations squad, which means Altay Bayindir is set to get his break in goal.

The tournament kicks off January 13 and runs until February 11, meaning Onana will be unavailable for potentially four crucial Premier League games: Spurs at home, Wolves away, West Ham at home, and Aston Villa away.

While the loss of Onana stings, the midfield trio of Sofyan Amrabat (Morocco), Hannibal Mejbri (Tunisia), and Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast) could also be called up, adding to Erik ten Hag’s selection headache.

However, with Diallo yet to return from a knee injury and the outfield trio potentially replaceable, the real concern falls squarely on Onana’s deputy, Altay Bayindir.

The 25-year-old, signed on deadline day, hasn’t played a single minute for United. Now, he’s set to be thrown into the deep end, facing off against some of the Premier League’s top attackers while navigating his debut season in a high-pressure environment.

Ten Hag’s reluctance to give Bayindir a taste of action earlier will be heavily scrutinized if the young Turk falters in Onana’s absence. It’s a baptism by fire for Bayindir, a test of his talent and composure, and a make-or-break moment for United’s title aspirations.

Ten Hag did recently show his support for Bayindir in the absence of Onana.

“When he (Onana) goes there, we have a strong group of keepers with Bayindir and Tom Heaton so we are comfortable,” said Ten Hag.

“Of course, we hope Andre is available as much as possible, but if not we have two good keepers who can replace him.”
