Montella revealed that his decision to bench Güler was due to concerns over the player’s fitness, with the Italian coach prioritizing the long-term well-being of the young talent.
“I’m sorry about Arda Güler. Arda was tired & there was a risk of injury. I thought about it when he was included in the game,” Montella said via the decision.
The decision to omit Güler from the starting lineup was met with criticism from fans, with many questioning the manager’s tactics. However, Montella’s apology has offered some clarity on the situation.
Montella did bring the attacking midfielder back into the side for the remaining games.
Güler ended up being one of the players of the tournament for the Turkish national team becoming the third teenager since Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney to score and provide an assist.
In total he scored once and provided two assists for Turkey who reached the quarter finals of Euro 2024 for the first time in 16 years.
Güler has returned to Real as an important first team player and is expected to stay at the club despite being linked with a loan move.
