Trabzonspor’s president, Ertuğrul Doğan, has publicly confirmed the club’s robust interest in securing the services of Ipswich Town defender Axel Tuanzebe, signaling a strong intent to bolster their defensive ranks for the upcoming season. The 27-year-old English center-back’s contract with Ipswich is set to expire this summer, making him a highly attractive prospect for clubs seeking experienced talent without a transfer fee.

Speaking via Turkish-Football, Doğan unequivocally stated: “Axel Tuanzebe is a player that our scouting team and coach like.”

This official acknowledgment solidifies earlier reports from Turkish media outlets which highlighted Trabzonspor manager Fatih Tekke’s keenness on bringing Tuanzebe to Papara Park. Tekke reportedly envisions Tuanzebe primarily as a central defender, despite his versatility which saw him predominantly feature as a right-back during his time in Suffolk.

Tuanzebe’s future at Ipswich Town has been a subject of considerable discussion, particularly following the club’s relegation from the Premier League. While Ipswich has reportedly tabled a new deal to retain his services, the defender has yet to commit, leaving the door wide open for potential suitors. His availability as a free agent presents a cost-effective yet impactful opportunity for Trabzonspor.

A product of Manchester United’s esteemed academy, Tuanzebe brings a wealth of experience gained from various loan spells at clubs like Aston Villa, Stoke City, and Napoli. He joined Ipswich Town in September 2023 and quickly became a key figure, making 44 appearances and playing a crucial role in their Championship promotion push in 2024. Despite an injury-disrupted Premier League campaign, he remained one of Ipswich’s more consistent performers, showcasing his defensive capabilities and adaptability.

Trabzonspor, who finished seventh in the Turkish Super Lig last season and narrowly missed out on a European qualification spot, are keen to improve their standing and make a stronger push for continental competition in the next campaign.

The potential acquisition of Tuanzebe would provide a valuable addition to their backline, offering both defensive solidity and leadership.

His experience in high-pressure environments, stemming from his time at Manchester United and in the Premier League, would be a significant asset for the Turkish side as they prepare for a challenging season ahead. This move underscores Trabzonspor’s strategic approach to recruitment, targeting established players who can immediately contribute to their ambitions.
