The opening leg of the UEFA Champions League play-off between Fenerbahce and Benfica concluded in a tense goalless draw on Wednesday, leaving everything to play for in the return leg.
The match at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium was marked by a moment of indiscipline when Benfica midfielder Florentino Luís was shown a red card, forcing the visitors to play the final 20 minutes with ten men. The sending-off came after Luís received his second yellow card for a cynical foul on Fenerbahce’s Anderson Talisca.
TNT Sports pundit and former goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer did not mince words in his assessment of the incident.
“Yeah crazy, absolutely crazy from Florentino there. Obviously he just switches off,” Schwarzer said. “I mean he’s just got that yellow card and the referee has no other option other than to give him his second yellow card. Now for Benfica, it will be backs to the wall.”
Commentator Steve Wilson echoed Schwarzer’s sentiments, highlighting the clear view the referee had of the foul. “He couldn’t have been more under referee Daniel Siebert’s nose than that. It’s clear as day and the outcome was absolutely inevitable,” Wilson remarked.
Despite having a numerical advantage, Fenerbahce failed to capitalize. The home side had their chances, including a disallowed header from Youssef En-Nesyri for offside. However, Benfica’s defense held firm, ensuring the tie remains balanced heading into the second leg.
With a coveted spot in the Champions League group stage on the line, the decisive second leg will take place in Lisbon next Wednesday evening, with live coverage on TNT Sports and discovery+.
