Ilkay Gundogan has revealed why he turned down offers from Europe’s elite and signed a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a deal until 2016 despite previously stating that he would leave the club to seek a new challenge.

Gundogan, who is currently touring Japan with the Dortmund squad was closely linked with the Premier League sides Manchester United and Arsenal. Bayern Munich and Barcelona were also reported to be interested in the Germany international.

“BVB are one of the biggest clubs in Europe right now,” Gundogan was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

“Or at least on the right path to becoming one.

“Every training session right now is important for us. Especially the ones we are doing here in Asia.”

The 24-year-old previously turned down a contract offer from Dortmund but changed his mind regarding his future following discussions with their newly appointed manager Thomas Tuchel.

Gündoğan wrapped up the season with five assists and three goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.
