Liverpool star Emre Can explains decision to represent Germany

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has explained his decision behind opting to represent the Germany national team.

Can was born into a Turkish family in Germany and has the option to play for both countries.

“It took me a long time to come to this decision. Joachim Low has been in talks with me for the past three months,” Can was quoted as saying by SporX.

“He explained my role in the team and he sent me a text saying that he would call me up to the national team.

“I was extremely happy after receiving the text and felt very proud.”

Turks form the largest non-German ethnic minority in Germany with an estimated 3-4 million population.

Some of the brightest talents in German football today are of Turkish origin including Mesut Özil, Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Ilkay Gündoğan.

Özil Gündoğan represent the country they were born in while Çalhanoğlu, Gökhan Töre, Hamit Altıntop, Mehmet Ekici, Hakan Balta are all a part of the Turkish national team setup.

The 21-year-old featured in Germany u21’s European Championship campaign in the Czech Republic earlier this summer. Can scored a goal in his sides opening game and provided an assist in the second group game.
