Beşiktaş beat Istanbul minnows Başakşehir 2-0 at the Atatürk Olympic stadium in the mini-Istanbul derby on Sunday 13 September.
Black Eagles manager Şenol Güneş gave Mario Gomez his first start of the season and it did not take long for the Germany international to get on the scoresheet. The powerful forward found the bottom corner on 15 minutes to put the home side ahead.
Gomez doubled the Istanbul giants lead shortly after the half-time break finishing in style a well timed pass from Gökhan Töre who lead an explosive counter-attacking move from just past the half-way line.
The experienced striker scored the Eagles 2999th goal and had numerous chances to go down in history as the player to score the 3000th towards the end of the game.
Beşiktaş moved into first place in the league with nine points after four games following the win. The Istanbul giants have also scored the highest number of goals in the league – 12.
The Eagles take on Gençlerbirliği in Ankara next on Monday 21 September.
