Beşiktaş striker Mario Gomez has revealed that the Black Eagles aim to win the Europa League this season and that it is a realistic goal.
Gomez did however, underline that there are a few teams that could cause the Istanbul giants a few problems including Liverpool.
Speaking to the official Europe League website Gomez said: “It is a dream and a target for all of us. This is the one trophy that is missing from my collection; I’ve won the Champions League, been a domestic champion and cup winner [in Germany], so basically I have won everything at club level – except the Europa League. So it would be great to win it. But there are some very good teams in the Europa League this season, like Dortmund and Schalke from Germany, and Liverpool.”
The Germany international has hit the ground running at Beşiktaş scoring six goals in eight league games including a brace in the Istanbul derby against Fenerbahçe.
The brace from Gomez helped break the Eagles derby curse that had plagued them over recent years. Beşiktaş had failed to win a single derby game in two seasons until the 3-2 win over Fenerbahçe a fortnight ago.
Beşiktaş did of course face Liverpool in the Europa League Round of 32 last season and eliminated the Reds from the competition on penalty shoot outs.
Slaven Bilic was in charge of the Beşiktaş side that beat Liverpool but has since moved onto West Ham. The Eagles are currently managed by Şenol Güneş who guided Turkey to 3rd in the 2002 World Cup.
