Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has revealed the Lazar Markovic was not good enough for the club in his opinion.

Lawrenson wrote the following in his column for the Liverpool Echo: “It was soon nipped in the bud. But in any case, Markovic just didn’t do enough last season to convince he could make the grade at Anfield.

“You can only give a player so many chances. Wide players will drive you mad, but you have to be realistic and a touch harsh.”

Markovic was signed for £20 million from Benfica under the stewardship of former Reds manager Brendan Rodgers last summer but failed to settle in.

The Serbian international feels he was played out of position as a wingback and recently criticised Rodgers for his decision to play him out of position.

Markovic joined Fenerbahçe on a one-year loan over the summer and has established himself as a first team regular at the Istanbul giants.

There were rumours that Markovic could be returning to Liverpool over the winter break but sources close to Fenerbahçe told Turkish-Football.com that he will be staying at the club until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old featured in the Intercontinental derby 1-1 draw against Galatasaray last weekend and is expected to keep his side in the team ahead of the midweek game against Osmanlıspor tomorrow.
