Former Chelsea and Roma striker Tammy Abraham was the star of the show, scoring a stunning first-half hat-trick to lead Besiktas to a commanding 4-1 victory over St Patrick’s Athletic in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League third qualifying round tie. The result gives the Turkish side a significant advantage heading into the return leg in Istanbul.
Besiktas, managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Just eight minutes into the match, Portuguese midfielder Joao Mario opened the scoring with a deflected shot from the edge of the box that left St Patrick’s goalkeeper Joseph Anang with no chance.
Abraham, an 11-time capped England international, began his masterclass just six minutes later. A cross from the left by Jonas Svensson found the striker, who bundled the ball home to double the lead. The 27-year-old was a constant threat, and he grabbed his second goal on 23 minutes after Mario turned provider, playing a perfectly weighted through ball that Abraham expertly chipped over Anang.
The hat-trick was completed just two minutes before the half-time whistle when Abraham calmly converted a penalty, sending Besiktas into the break with a formidable 4-0 lead.
Despite facing a daunting deficit, St Patrick’s, led by former Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny, showed character in the second half. They pulled a goal back three minutes after the restart when Simon Power beat Besiktas’s goalkeeper Mert Gunok at his near post.
The home side continued to push, with young Tottenham-bound striker Mason Melia creating a golden opportunity shortly after, but his shot was saved by Gunok. While St Patrick’s put in a much-improved second-half performance, they couldn’t find another goal.
Besiktas now holds a firm grip on the tie as they head back to Istanbul for the second leg in seven days’ time, leaving the Saints with a monumental task to overcome the three-goal deficit. The winner of this tie will face either Lausanne or Astana in the play-off round, with the Swiss club currently holding a 3-1 advantage.
