Arsenal legend believes club could be tempted into selling £42m star midfielder in January

Former Arsenal star and Skysports pundit Charlie Nicholas has predicted that Unai Emery could be tempted into sell Mesut Ozil in January.

Ozil has been linked with a move away from the north London based club following a turbulent summer and a slow start to the season.

However, the 29-year-old has returned to form in recent weeks with two goals in three games. Ozil also played a key role in Arsenal’s win over Everton on Sunday.

According to Nicholas, Ozil could leave the club in January unless his performances improve. The SkySports pundit cited Fenerbahce as a possible destination for the World Cup winner.

“If this isn’t improved by January, and a decent offer comes in, Arsenal will let him go,” Nicholas told SkySports.

“It keeps coming up that Fenerbahce and these sort of clubs would be interested in looking at him.

“I don’t know financially how they could do it, (perhaps) some of the Chinese money that has been floating about.

“There will be teams that are interested and I’ll tell you how it will end up working.

“It wouldn’t be a salary thing, it would be a big chunk of money that he would get and that would nurse the bruising that his salary would have to drop a bit. ‘But the thing is, is he really that committed to it?

“I think we are starting to identify that the new manager, it’s taken him quite a bit of time, is getting on fine with him, but he will be saying ‘if you’re not playing well, you’ll be out the team’, and he will not accept that Ozil.”

Turkish Football recently reported that a move to Fenerbahce is highly unlikely and that the Istanbul giants are in no position to sign Ozil in the near future. Furthermore, Ozil has started all but one Premier League game for Unai Emery’s side.
