during previews for the WTA Championships 2011 on October 23, 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The latest social media engagement figures compiled by Football Benchmark through up a few surprises.

Despite being the richest league in the world, earning €2 billion more than any other European league, Premier League clubs are not dominating Twitter in terms of engagement.

In fact just two Premier League sides made the top 10.

Galatasaray have the highest Twitter engagement per post in the world for February followed by Istanbul rivals Besiktas.

Real Madrid are the only club from the top-five leagues outside of England to feature.

The Spanish giants came in fourth, followed by Trabzonspor and then Arsenal and Manchester United.

Interestingly enough Real actually have the highest number of followers from the list with 29.3 million, followed by United with 17.5 million and Arsenal’s 13.3 million.

The leaders Galatasaray have 8.21 million followers on their official Twitter account while Besiktas have 3.65.

The Turkish Super Lig had the highest representation with three clubs that made the top 10, followed by the Premier League and Brazilian top-tier both with two sides each.

Six of the sides were from the UEFA zone, three from South America and one from Africa – Al Ahly.
