Arsenal star rejected £100m Chinese offer, Man United favourites to sign playmaker

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has revealed that he rejected a £100 million offer from China over the summer.

Ozil stated that he would have received £100 million over a five year spell, a fee that he described as being a ‘fairy tale amount of money’.

Writing in his new autobiography Gunning for Greatness Ozil wrote: “When I got an offer from China last summer..the offer was too absurd.

“The Chinese were prepared to pay me £100million net over a period of five years – a fairy tale amount of money that went beyond the limits of my imagination.

“In spite of this it took me less than three minutes to decline the offer.

“My agent, Erkut, called me to let me know about the bid. He said: ‘I think we’re agreed what we are going to do, aren’t we? You won’t consider it will you?’

“I’m nowhere near the end of my career, I replied. I still want to win titles with Arsenal.

“I don’t want to play in China no much they’re willing to pay. No way.”

Ozil’s future at Arsenal is however, in doubt as he will have just 12 months remaining on his contract at the end of the season.

The Germany international of Turkish origin has yet to reveal whether he will extend his stay or leave.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United over recent weeks.

The bookmakers have also made United favourites to become Ozil’s next club.

Ozil would be in for a reunion with his former coach Jose Mourinho if he were to join the Red Devils.

Mourinho and Ozil previously worked together at Real Madrid.

Ozil is expected to start for the Gunners today against Middlesbrough in the Premier League.
