Galatasaray take on Basaksehir at the Fatih Terim Stadium in the Super Lig on Sunday.

The Lions have got off to an awful start following the Super Lig restart, failing to win a single game.

Fortunately for the reigning champions, Trabzonspor have dropped points for the past two games and they have the chance to close the gap with leaders Basaksehir to five points at a stadium bizarrely named after their own manager.

Basaksehir vs Galatasaray Preview

Galatasaray are in an odd place. Heading into the restart they were arguably in the strongest position. After a brilliant run in 2020 they got a lengthy rest. They have arguably the strongest squad in the league and a manager in Fatih Terim who has been there, done that and got the t-shirt. Terim is the only head coach among the title challengers who has won silverware as a manager. You would have expected his side to deal with the final lap the best but it has not quite worked out that way.

Basaksehir managed by Okan Buruk have, on the other hand, done a brilliant job. Buruk is fast establishing himself as the future of Turkish football management. And being an ex Galatasaray player it would not be a surprise to see him take charge of the Lions in the near future. But back to the present. The Istanbul minnows are a well organised, balanced side who have been firing on all cylinders.

Edin Visca makes this side tick and he will have to be at his best. Irfan Can Kahveci provides a creative spark in midfield and veteran striker Demba Ba has been having a late renaissance.

It is worth underlining that Basaksehir are the only side in the league who are used to playing without fans. They were least affected by the decision to play behind closed doors.

Basaksehir are the favorites which could actually not work in their favor. They are used to being the underdogs. Galatasaray meanwhile, still have some fight left in them. It would be crazy to write them off just yet. There is value in them leaving with at least a point.
