Besiktas boss reveals why he would prefer to face Man United over Lyon

Manchester United are the bookmakers favourites to win the Europa League but Besiktas manager Senol Gunes feels that they would have suited his side better than Lyon.

Besiktas will take on Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals but he feels the French giants will not play into their hands.

Gunes revealed that he would have preferred to have draw United in the quarter-finals because Lyon play quick, attacking football.

“If you had offered me Manchester United or Lyon, I would have taken United, because with Lyon we have to play a team with a great attack that plays quick football. We’re up against a tough side, but we got here by overcoming difficulties,” Gunes was quoted as saying on the official UEFA website.

Besiktas and Lyon have similar styles of play in many respects. Both sides like to play fast paced, attacking football.

The Black Eagles scored 10 goals over the course of the Round of 32 and Round of 16 stages against Hapoel Beer-Sheva and Olympiakos, respectively.

Lyon meanwhile scored 16 goals over the two previous rounds following convincing aggregate victories over AZ Alkmaar and Roma.

The first-leg quarter-final clash will be played in a fortnights time in France, followed by the return leg at the Vodafone Arena in Istanbul where Besiktas have not lost a single home game in European competition.
