Turkish international winger Kerim Frei did not start for Birmingham City but he was brought on from the bench for the second week running.

Birmingham City boss Gianfranco Zola revealed after the game that the introduction of Frei and Che Adams proved to be a pivotal moment for his side.

Zola was quoted in the Birmingham Mail as saying: “There was a moment when the goal unsettled us, but I think when we changed, Kerim [Frei] came on the pitch and we changed with Che [Adams] and we had something more going forward. That created a lot more opportunities.”

The Blues found the equaliser after Frei came on and the fact that Zola singled him out for praise may suggest that he will get more playing time next week.

Frei joined Birmingham City from Besiktas in January but despite making nine appearances he has only started twice.

The 23-year-old winger has Champions League, Europa League and international experience.

Frei played an important role in Besiktas winning the league title last season but left the Black Eagles in pursuit of more regular playing time as a first-choice player.
