Jamie Carragher has stated that he wanted Liverpool to sign Mesut Ozil after watching him play for Germany’s Under 21s in 2009.
The SkySports pundit and former Liverpool defender has told the Daily Star that he had a conversation with club captain Steven Gerrard about the Germany international.
“I remember watching Ozil shine for Germany’s Under 21s in 2009 when they beat England 4-0,” Carragher was quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
“I said to Steven Gerrard at that time he was someone Liverpool had to go for. He was at Werder Bremen then and he was an attainable target.
“He continued that big impression at the World Cup in South Africa 12 months later but, by that time, Real Madrid had made their move.”
Ozil has been in impressive form for Arsenal this season providing 16 assists in 19 Premier League games. The World Cup winner is no stranger to Barcelona having joined Arsenal from Real Madrid who just happen to be huge rivals.
Arsenal booked a place in the FA Cup fourth-round following their 14th consecutive victory in the competition. The Gunners take on Liverpool next week in the Premier League.
