Gençlerbirliği president İlhan Cavcav revealed that he was extremely pleased with the players decision to shave their beards but underlined it had nothing to do with a facial hair ban.

“The beards made these kids look old anyway, now look at them, they look so suave after a shave,” Cavcav said.

“There is no beard ban but I want to thank my players for listening to me and doing this gesture.

“We have a very young team, İrfan is 19, Ahmet Çalık is 20, Artun is 21 and to see them all do this in my honour was a joy to see.”

Cavcav had planned to fine Gençlerbirliği players L25,000 (£7,150) who contravened his beard ban but later had a change of heart and left it up to his players to decide whether they would grow a goatee, a chin curtain or a hulihee.

The Gençlerbirliği starting XI took to the field clean shaven in the 2-2 draw against Karabükspor over the weekend.

Hakan, Doğa, Tomic, İrfan Can as well as substitutes Sedat and Artun all shaved off their beards.
