Fenerbahce Defeat Pushes Liverpool Towards Nightmare Champions League Draw While Giving Super Lig Rivals A Windfall

Liverpool have already booked a place in the Champions League group stage after finishing the Premier League as runners-up last season.

The Reds are currently in Pot 3 but would move into Pot 2 if Benfica fail to make it past the playoff round.

Fenerbahce missed their chance to eliminate Benfica from the third-round yesterday after losing 3-1 on aggregate.

If the Portuguese giants book a place in the group stages these are the clubs the Reds could draw.

Pot 1: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Lokomotiv Moscow

Pot 2: Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto, Manchester United, Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica, Napoli, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma

Liverpool would avoid Pot 2 which is looking pretty nightmarish with Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica, Napoli and Roma as potential opponents.

The Reds would face Dinamo Kiev, Schalke, Lyon, Monaco, Salzburg, CSKA Moscow or PSV Eindhoven from Pot 3.

The Benfica victory pushes Liverpool closer to a far tougher draw but Galatasaray would have celebrated the result.

The Lions are set for a windfall as the sole Super Lig representative in the Champions League.

The reigning Super Lig champions could stand to make €37m solely from qualifying for the group stage and TV rights revenues.
