Former Arsenal defender explains why Ozil wouldn’t break into Liverpool and Chelsea teams

Former Arsenal defender Perry Groves has revealed why Mesut Ozil hasn’t attracted attention from Europe’s elite.

The 28-year-old entered the final year of his contract and is yet to agree a new deal with the Gunners.

Groves claims that the Germany international’s style of play is a major factor why some clubs have avoided bidding for him.

The former Arsenal player did however disagree with some pundits who have label Ozil a luxury player.

“I think it comes down to what other clubs are looking for,” Groves told bwin.

“Liverpool, City, Chelsea and Spurs probably don’t need Ozil as he doesn’t suit their style of play.

“It’s nothing to do with Ozil’s quality, it’s more to do with the other teams style of play. When Arsenal lose the ball, he doesn’t contribute as much as other players would.

“He’s not a luxury player if he’s providing assists, scoring goals and creating chances, especially in the big games.

“If you’re contributing and having an effect on the game, you’re not a luxury player. If you’re not, then you become a luxury player.”

Meanwhile, the Arsenal playmaker has been linked with a move to the La Liga giants Barcelona.

According to the Spanish outlet Don Balon, Barcelona will turn their attention towards the World Cup winner if they are unable to sign Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho this summer.

Ozil has been included in Arsenal’s pre-season squad and the former Real Madrid man has played a major role in the Gunners friendly encounters.

The 28-year-old racked up 12 goals and 14 assists in 44 appearances for Arsenal last season.
