Galatasaray manager Hamza Hamzaoğlu has revealed that the Lions could sign a defender during the winter transfer period.

“Of course we are considering to make transfers in defence,” Hamzaoğlu told Turkish-football.com reporters following the 2-0 defeat against Diyarbakir BŞB in the Turkish Cup.

“I tried Melo and gave Emre Can a change, we will have a meeting with the board and decide what to do.” 

Club board member Abdurrahim Albayrak recently stated that the Lions may not make any January transfers however, the injury crisis in defence could force Galatasaray into reconsidering.

Galatasaray are currently missing several defenders. Semih Kaya is out injured and not expected back until mid-February at the earliest. Koray Günter is injured and Aurelian Chedjou is on international duty for Cameroon at the African Cup of Nations 2015.

Hamzaoğlu may be forced to play defensive-midfielder Felipe Melo as a centre-back.

Galatasaray are currently in third place, just one point behind league leaders Fenerbahçe.

The Lions have not lost any of their last six league games, winning five and drawing one.
