The Lions have made strengthening their defence a priority following injuries to Turkish international Semih Kaya and Cameroon international Aurelian Chedjou being on international duty at the African Cup of Nations.
The report claims that Wesley Sneijder has advised his fellow compatriot to consider moving to Turkey.
Galatasaray would have to part ways with at least one foreign player in order to sign Vlaar.
Süper Lig clubs are currently only permitted to sign nine foreign players and Galatasaray have already filled their quota.
However, Galatasaray would be able to sign him if they reach an agreement for the Netherlands international to join at the end of the season.
The foreign player restrictions are being relaxed next season, Süper Lig clubs will be able to sign 14 non-Turkish players.
Several Premier League clubs are also reported to be keeping close tabs on Vlaar.
