Galatasaray has completed a major signing, bringing experienced German midfielder İlkay Gündoğan to the club on a free transfer from Manchester City. The 34-year-old has agreed to a deal with the Turkish champions that will keep him in Istanbul until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Gündoğan, who had one year remaining on his contract with City, was allowed to leave as the Turkish transfer window remains open until September 12.
“Manchester City will always hold a special place in my heart,” Gündoğan said. “We have enjoyed so much success in our time together and there have been so many unforgettable moments, not least being captain for the Treble-winning season.”
The midfielder, who was born in Germany to Turkish parents, reflected on his time in England with immense pride.
“To win the Premier League and FA Cup trophies meant so much to me, but to then be afforded the opportunity of lifting the Champions League trophy for this club for the first time, especially in Istanbul, will live with me forever.”
Gündoğan first joined City as Pep Guardiola’s inaugural signing in 2016 and spent seven successful years at the club before a brief stint at Barcelona.
He rejoined City in August 2024 and made 33 Premier League appearances last season. During his time at the Etihad, he won five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2022-23.
Manchester City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, praised Gündoğan’s legacy, stating, “İlkay Gündoğan is a name synonymous with success at Manchester City. We will never forget his legacy here.”
