Yellow-Reds manager Okan Buruk revealed after the game that he instructed his central midfield duo of Lucas Torreira and Kaan Ayhan to target Casemiro.

The United midfielder ended up getting sent off in the second half after a second yellow card offence.

“We wanted to apply pressure on Casemiro in the midfield with Torreira. Kaan is a player who plays well there in a somewhat defensive direction and without a ball,” Buruk said.

“We wanted to use the two together. I think Kaan did a very important task. He supported. Next to him, we used Kerem behind the striker this time.

“We made our front pressures with Kerem and Icardi. We gave our opponent positions. We also entered many positions. We attacked our opponents goal often.”

Buruk also felt that Galatasaray could have gone onto score a fourth had they converted the penalty.

Mauro Icardi missed from the penalty spot but redeemed himself by scoring the winning goal just minutes later.

The Lions did get chances afterward to extend their lead but ended up hanging onto the 3-2 scoreline.

“If we took the 3-2 lead with the penalty, maybe we could finish the match with the fourth goal. After the penalty, we made hasty decisions again when we had the ball,” he added.

“The team in front of us is also a team that can move very fast. After grabbering the ball, they do defensive back runs very fast.

“We played against a very productive, moving and variable team. Our plans, our game kept and we got a significant win.”
