Gary Neville Singles Out Arsenal Star Mesut Ozil For Criticism After Mexico Goal

Germany lost their opening World Cup 2018 game 1-0 against Mexico on Sunday.

Mesut Ozil played the entire 90 minutes for Germany in the surprise defeat against El Tri.

Despite putting up pretty decent numbers, creating four goalscoring chances, having 90 percent pass accuracy and being one of the better players on the day he still came under fire from Gary Nevill.

Neville managed to criticise Ozil’s defending in Hirving Lozano’s goal.

The playmaker of Turkish origin was easily beaten in the box by Lozano before the winger shot the ball past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

What appeared to be ignored was that Ozil was one of the few players that tracked back, meanwhile, the actual defenders were missing in action.

“Mexico are a good side obviously but I couldn’t believe how many times they looked disorganised and counter-attacked on,” Neville said of Germany on ITV.

“You just don’t associate that with Germany at all. You just think of them being the most organised, the most prepared.

“Ozil there, it’s a shocker of a challenge. They deserved it Mexico, they absolutely deserved it.”

To be fair Neville did criticise the whole team in addition to Ozil’s rather feeble challenge.

The Germany side will be hoping to get their campaign back on track against Sweden next on Saturday 23 June at the Fisht Olympic Stadium.

The second Group F game will take place tomorrow between Sweden and South Korea.
