Goztepe Soar to Super Lig Helped by Southampton Connection

Göztepe, secured promotion to the Turkish Super Lig with a convincing 2-0 victory over Genclerbirligi.

Their success is partly attributed to Southampton’s own loanee, goalkeeper Mateusz Lis, who kept an impressive 20 clean sheets in 31 matches.

This marks the first promotion under Göztepe’s new ownership group, Sport Republic. Meanwhile, in France, Valenciennes suffered relegation from Ligue 2.

Southampton who are also owned by Sport Republic are a sister club of Goztepe and will be hoping for top flight football as well next season.

The Saints, currently sitting fourth in the Championship, are hoping to emulate Göztepe’s rise. However, their recent form is a concern, having lost their last three games.

Their final match of the season is a crucial clash against promotion rivals Leeds United, a potential playoff final rematch.

Goztepe are one of the biggest clubs in the city of Izmir and have a large fan base. The club have been a yo-yo club between the top and second tier over the past few seasons.

The Izmir based side will be hoping to remain in the top flight and start becoming more competitive in the Super Lig over the near future.
