“He was definitely the main man” – Man City’s Gundogan waxes lyrical about teammate following last-second victory

Manchester City star playmaker Ilkay Gundogan has heaped praise on his in-form teammate Raheem Sterling.

The Germany international was given his first Premier League start of the season by Pep Guardiola for City’s clash with Southampton on Wednesday night.

The Citizens came away with a victory following a last second goal from Sterling. The 22-year-old has registered four assists and scored an impressive 13 goals in 19 appearances for City so far this season.

Gundogan hailed Sterling’s recent form and stated that the squad is delighted with his football.

“The way he scored was just incredible, especially in the last seconds of the game,” Gundogan told SkySports.

“It is not easy to do that and he is playing an unbelievable season. He was definitely the main man out there and we are so happy to have him.

“I guess this is why we play football, why everybody loves to watch football. We feel so happy after that second goal. It was a really good day for us.

“We were against a really tough opponent. We didn’t really expect them to defend 90 minutes like they did and they created two or three dangerous situations after corners.

“That was not so easy but, all in all, I think we performed well. We are just really happy we have won the game and we just continue with our winning series.”

City maintained their winning run on Wednesday night and protected their eight point gap between themselves and Manchester United.

Guardiola’s side take on an out-of-form West Ham United this weekend at the Etihad stadium.

Gundogan recently returned to City’s first-team squad after recovering from a long-term knee injury.
