‘I am for City!’ – Liverpool star reveals why he will not be supporting Man United

Liverpool star Emre Can has revealed who he will be backing in the Manchester derby.

Manchester United will not be surprised to hear that a Liverpool player won’t be backing them considering the rivalry between the two clubs.

Can’s reasoning behind not supporting United isn’t however, based on rivalry but pragmatism.

The Germany international of Turkish origin underlined that he will be supporting City because it would increase the Reds chances of finishing in the top four.

“Is that the better result? A City win? Then I am for City!” Can was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.

“One of the top teams will drop points and that is a good thing. We have to be there and in the next game against Watford, we have to win again.”

A look at the Premier League table shows that Can may not have considered all the permutations.

City are two points behind 3rd placed Liverpool, United meanwhile are three points behind the Reds in 5th position.

A United win would mean Liverpool remain 3rd as they have a better goal difference.

If City win the Reds would drop into 4th.

On the flip side if City win and move into 3rd place there will still be a three point gap between Liverpool and United.

It could be argued that City winning would be the lesser of two evils as far as Liverpool are concerned.

An alternative scenario not explored by Gundogan is the prospect of a draw.

United and City have two games in hand, if they both draw their next two league games the Reds will remain in 3rd place.

Liverpool also face a threat from Arsenal who despite currently being nine points behind in 7th place have three games in hand.

  1. Both United and City have two games in hand over Liverpool. A United win would be worse as there’d be two teams able to finish ahead of Liverpool. If United lose they’d be even on points with Liverpool if they win their other game in hand with less goal difference and still have to face Spurs and Arsenal. Let City finish 3rd I say, not much difference besides a qualifying match.

  2. SO petty. Just because Man united don’t need to go for qualifying round and suffer for they wont Europha league.. That’s his freaking problems. Why would manchester united will reach 4th and suffer alot with fewer defenders.
