“I don’t think it would be a big blow” – Liverpool would benefit from losing Emre Can says former Ireland defender

Former Republic of Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham has suggested that Liverpool would be better off without Emre Can.

The 24-year-old midfielder has been closely linked with at Merseyside exit after failing to put pen-to-paper on a new deal. Can has under four months left on his current deal and could end up leaving the club for free in the summer.

Despite Can’s ongoing contract dispute with the club, manager Jurgen Klopp has kept the Germany international in his starting eleven.

However, Liverpool shouldn’t be worried about offloading Can in the summer according to Cunningham. In fact, the former footballer turned pundit believes the Reds could be better off without the combative midfielder.

“There’s been a lot of talk of Can allowing his contract to run down at the club [and] maybe leaving,” Cunningham told Irish radio station Newstalk.

“I don’t think it would be a big blow to Liverpool.

“If Emre Can is playing central midfield for Liverpool next season, they have a big problem.”

Can played the full 90 minutes during Liverpool’s exciting 2-2 draw with Tottenham over the weekend.

Klopp’s side are back in action on Sunday when they face Southampton in the Premier League.
