“I will no longer stand for being a scapegoat” – Mesut Ozil quits national team citing racism

Arsenal star playmaker Mesut Ozil has retired from international following a turbulent summer.

The 29-year-old has hit out to the treatment he has received with a statement released on social media.

Ozil has stated that his reason for retiring from the national team is down to ‘racism and disrespect.’

The former Real Madrid star went onto state that the way he has been treated by the German FA makes him “no longer want to wear the German national team shirt.”

Ozil went onto single out DFB president Reinhard Grindel claiming, “I will no longer stand for being a scapegoat for his incompetence and inability to do his job properly.”

Ozil returned to Arsenal for pre-season training earlier this week. The 29-year-old will travel with the rest of the squad to Singapour later this month.
