‘It was an insult to buy Mesut Ozil’ – Arsenal legend slams decision to sign £42.5m playmaker

Arsenal playmaker Tony Adams has revealed that it was ‘an insult’ to buy Mesut Ozil when they had a player like Jack Wilshere available.

Adams revealed that he thought Wilshere was every bit as good as the Germany international of Turkish origin.

Adams told the Evening Standard: “It was an insult to buy Mesut Ozil when we’ve got Jack Wilshere there, who is every bit as good.

“If I’d been Jack I’d have knocked on Arsene’s door and said ‘why the hell are you spending £40m on this player when I can do it just as well’.

“A lot of fans have questioned Ozil and his desire to win.

“When you’ve got a player and you’re giving them lots of money they have to contribute.”

Wilshere’s career took a dip following the arrival of Ozil and he was loaned out to Bournemouth last summer.

The England international even struggled at the Cherries this season leading to questions marks over his long-term future at Arsenal.

Wilshere provided just two assists in 29 appearances for Bournemouth this season.

Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid for a £42.5m record transfer fee in 2013.

The Turkish origin playmaker has won three FA Cup trophies since making the move but has yet to lift the Premier League trophy.

Ozil finished the season with 13 goals and seven assists in all competitions this season.
