“It’s embarrassing” – Arsene Wenger should quit if Arsenal lose to Tottenham in the north London derby today, says Gunners legend
Former Arsenal star midfielder Paul Merson has made a bold statement ahead of the north London derby.
Merson believes Arsene Wenger should put an end to his long spell as Arsenal manager if his side sufferes a defeat against Tottenham today.
The fierce rivals meet at the Emirates, kick-off is scheduled for 12:30 (GMT).
“If Arsenal lose, Arsene Wenger should walk away. That should be it for him,” Merson told the Daily Star.
“I remember when you never expected Spurs to get much out of these games, and you knew they’d still finish below Arsenal at the end of the season. Not any more.
“I haven’t spoken to a single Arsenal fan who fancies them to win.
“It has swung so massively in Tottenham’s favour it’s embarrassing.”
Germany international playmaker Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are both available for selection today. The pair have been criticised for their commitment to the club in recent weeks.
Both Ozil and Sanchez have under seven months remaining on their contract’s with Arsenal and could end up leaving the club for free next summer.
Arsenal will be up against an in-form Tottenham today. Spurs have registered back-to-back wins, which include a 3-1 win over Real Madrid at Wembley.
